RAMALLAH // Israeli troops killed a Palestinian teenager and wounded five others on Sunday in a refugee camp in the northern West Bank city of Jenin.
Palestinian police said a group of young Palestinians hurled rocks at the Israeli troops, who responded with fire and fatally shot Mohammed Khalefeh. Different sources put Khalefeh’s age at 18 or 19.
The Israeli military claimed its forces were also attacked with pipe bombs before they responded. An army spokeswoman confirmed that none of its soldiers were hurt, however.
It was not clear what the Israeli troops were doing in the refugee camp. Israeli forces routinely carry out arrest raids in the West Bank against alleged Palestinian militants but, according to the Palestinian Maan news agency, the Israeli army said no detentions had been made.
Citing reports, Maan said dozens of Israeli military vehicles stormed the camp after undercover Israeli forces had entered in a civilian vehicle.
State-run Palestinian news agency Wafa said Khalefeh was left on the ground for hours before paramedics were able to access his body, Maan reported.
Hundreds of mourners turned out for his funeral later in the day, carrying his body through the streets of the camp.
