Yemen security forces killed in attack

Six members of the Yemeni security forces were killed when armed men attacked an intelligence services building in the southern city of Aden and freed prisoners.

Eleven people including at least six members of the security forces have been killed in an attack on a Yemeni intelligence headquarters in the southern port of Aden, medics said. During the attack by a group of armed men an unknown number of prisoners suspected of being members of al Qa'eda were also set free, local officials said on condition of anonymity. Medics reported that one of the dead was a woman cleaner in the building housing the intelligence services in the Al-Tawahi district of the city near the port. Witnesses said five men attacked the building with rocket-propelled grenades, grenades and machine guns, and that ambulances were at the scene. The witnesses said the assailants were able to enter the building and "were seen leaving the building, taking people who had been detained there with them."

Local authorities said the building in the al Tawahi district near the port came under fire at 4.40am GMT, and that the attack may have been the work of al Qa'eda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). *AFP
