ISIL is on the defensive and their cause is lost: Obama

WASHINGTON // ISIL is on the defensive and “their cause is lost,” US president Barack Obama said Wednesday after meeting with CIA chiefs and other security officials.

Mr Obama paid a rare visit to CIA headquarters in Virginia to discuss progress of Operation Inherent Resolve, the 20-month-old US-led campaign against ISIL in Iraq and Syria.

“ISIL is on the defensive, and we are on the offensive,” Mr Obama said. “We have momentum, and we intend to keep that momentum.”

The US president pointed to recent air strikes that killed three senior leaders and a report this week showing the group’s ranks are at their lowest level since 2014.

“In the days and weeks ahead we intend to take out more. Every day, ISIL leaders wake up and understand it could be their last,” Mr Obama said.

“Their ranks of fighters are estimated to be at the lowest levels in two years and more and more are realising that their cause is lost,” he added.

Obama stressed the importance of ending the five-year civil war in Syria as key to facilitating a lasting defeat of the group.

“So we continue to work for a diplomatic end to this awful conflict,” he said.

Earlier Wednesday, Baghdad-based spokesman Colonel Steve Warren said the US-led coalition campaign had successfully entered the second “phase” of operations.

The coalition is working through three main steps as it wages its 20-month-old fight against the ISIL, Col Warren said.

“Our enemy has been weakened and we now are working to fracture him. Phase one of the military campaign is complete,” Col Warren told Pentagon reporters, noting that this initial step was to “degrade” the ISIL group by stopping it from making additional territorial gains.

“We are now in phase two, which is to dismantle this enemy,” he added.

Col Warren said the final phase of the campaign is to ensure ISIL is dealt a lasting defeat, primarily by enabling local forces to prevent a resurgence of jihadist influence.

Though the militants maintain a firm grip on vast areas of the two countries, they have suffered some serious setbacks including the loss of Ramadi in Iraq.

“While ISIL can still put together some complex attacks, they have not been able to take hold of any key terrain for almost a year now,” Col Warren said.

The smuggler

Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.

Khouli conviction

Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

For sale

A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.
