A hospital and two schools reopened in Ataq in Yemen yesterday after they were refurbished by the Emirates Red Crescent (ERC).

The Ataq Central Hospital, the Heneishan Secondary School for Boys and the Arwa School for Girls in the directorate of Ataq in Shabwah Governorate, southeast of the capital Sanaa, reopened after maintenance, restoration, rehabilitation and furnishing works at the two schools were completed. The ERC had awarded the contract for the work last August, Wam reported.

Mohammed Saif Al Muhairi, head of the ERC team in Shabwah, highlighted the importance of restoring health and education infrastructure for the people of Yemen, which has been hit by a civil war sparked by Iran-backed Houthi rebels fighting against the internationally-recognised government of president Abdrabu Mansur Hadi.

The inauguration of the restored hospital and schools in Ataq was attended by the director-general of the governorate's education, general health and population office.

Abdrabbuh Hashla Nasser, Secretary-General of the Local Council in Shabwah, praised the efforts of the UAE and its people for their support of the development of health and education services in Yemen, through the ERC.

A Saudi-led alliance, which includes the UAE, has been fighting in support of the internationally-recognised government since 2015.
