DUBAI // The British tourist Lee Brown, who died on last month in custody at the Bur Dubai Police Station, will be buried tomorrow in the City of London Cemetery.
In an announcement on www.justiceforleebrown.org, the family sent an open invitation to the public, asking for donations instead of flowers.
“Everyone is welcome... donations are welcome instead of flowers... so we can carry on fighting for justice,” the family said on the site.
Brown was arrested the Burj al Arab hotel on April 6 on suspicion of assaulting a hotel staff member, according to Dubai Police.
He was found dead in his cell on April 12, leading to an investigation by the Dubai Public Prosecution.
His family has said he was beaten by police and called for a more thorough inquiry.
Two post-mortem examinations by Dubai Police and Dubai Public Prosecution determined that Brown died of suffocation after vomit leaked into his respiratory tract.
The body was returned to his family two weeks ago, and a third autopsy was performed in the UK on May 3. The results have yet to be released.
On www.justiceforleebrown.org, set up by Brown's mother, Doris, his brother Steve and his sister-in-law Susanne, the family said his death would not be in vain.
“We are currently fighting for justice for Lee and the truth about his final days amid many many obstacles. We will continue in the hope that highlighting the tragic death of such a kind and generous man will have a more far-reaching impact on the conditions in which Lee was kept and the level of care that citizens can expect when overseas, whether working or on holiday, like Lee,” the family said in a statement.
The Brown family's lawyer, Katherine Craig, has not responded to repeated requests for comment.
