An explosion has wounded a Bahraini policeman in a Shiite village near Manama, the same place where an Emirati police officer was killed last month.

“On-duty policeman injured in homemade bomb blast in Daih village,” the interior ministry said late on Friday, without giving details.

Last month, a blast in Daih killed three policemen in the bloodiest attack on security forces since the start of a Shiite-led uprising in February 2011.

One of the police officers killed included an Emirati police officer serving in Bahrain, First Lieutenant Tariq Al Shehi.

Bahrain’s interior ministry described the blast as a terrorist attack.

Al Shehi was part of a joint Arabian Gulf force deployed in 2011 to quell protests led by the kingdom’s Shiite community. He was the first Gulf officer to be reported killed since the forces arrived in Bahrain.

It was not clear who was behind Friday’s attack.

Bahrain brought the initial 2011 protests under control, but small demonstrations and clashes with security forces continue.

Bahrain’s Shiite majority has long complained of discrimination, a charge denied by the Sunni-led government. Authorities have introduced reforms and say they are willing to discuss further demands, but the opposition says there can be no progress until the government is chosen by elected representatives.

Last year, authorities increased the penalties for those convicted of violence, introducing the death penalty or life sentences in certain cases.
