Pakistan has appointed a new chief of its powerful intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), after the previous head completed his term this month.
Lieutenant General Asim Munir, will take the charge from the outgoing ISI chief Lieutenant General Naveed Mukhtar, the Inter Services Public Relations, the military’s media wing said in a statement on Wednesday.
Mr Munir previously headed Military Intelligence and was a field commander. He was awarded the Hilal-i-Imtiaz, a top medal, earlier this year.
A professional and decorated military officer, Mr Munir previously commanded the Pakistani forces deployed in the mountainous northern region of Gilgit-Baltistan.
"The appointment of General Asim Munir is the good choice as he has lot of previous experience of intelligence and will not take time in settling in the post," General Ret Amjad Shoaib, a defence analyst told The National.
Ranked as the world's number one intelligence agency, the external operations arm of the ISI has long been accused by the United States and regional rival India of not taking action against certain insurgent groups, a charge Pakistan has repeatedly denied.
The ISI also plays a key role in shaping the foreign policy of South Asian country.
The US administration accused the ISI of providing safe havens to Haqqani network – the Afghan Taliban splinter group – in the neighbouring Afghan war. Former US military chief Admiral Mike Mullen once called the Haqqani Network "a veritable arm" of the ISI.
Relations between Islamabad and Washington remain strained and President Trump has cut down the $1.1 billion security assistance aid to Islamabad and blamed Pakistan of giving nothing to the US but "lies and deceit".

Prime Minister Imran Khan, soon after winning the elections in July, vowed to renegotiate the US-Pakistan relationship based on mutual respect. Pakistan and US officials have met several times since the Khan government came into power. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s paid a visit to Pakistan last month and both sides said it was fruitful. Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi also met Mr Pompeo on his US visit earlier this month.
Newly appointed spy chief Lieutenant-General Munir, is expected to play a key role in facilitating a negotiated resolution of the Afghan conflict.

Countdown to Zero exhibition will show how disease can be beaten
Countdown to Zero: Defeating Disease, an international multimedia exhibition created by the American Museum of National History in collaboration with The Carter Center, will open in Abu Dhabi a month before Reaching the Last Mile.
Opening on October 15 and running until November 15, the free exhibition opens at The Galleria mall on Al Maryah Island, and has already been seen at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta, the American Museum of Natural History in New York, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Conflict, drought, famine
Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.
Band Aid
Bob Geldof, singer with the Irish rock group The Boomtown Rats, formed Band Aid in response to the horrific images shown in the news broadcasts.

How Filipinos in the UAE invest
A recent survey of 10,000 Filipino expatriates in the UAE found that 82 per cent have plans to invest, primarily in property. This is significantly higher than the 2014 poll showing only two out of 10 Filipinos planned to invest.
Fifty-five percent said they plan to invest in property, according to the poll conducted by the New Perspective Media Group, organiser of the Philippine Property and Investment Exhibition. Acquiring a franchised business or starting up a small business was preferred by 25 per cent and 15 per cent said they will invest in mutual funds. The rest said they are keen to invest in insurance (3 per cent) and gold (2 per cent).
Of the 5,500 respondents who preferred property as their primary investment, 54 per cent said they plan to make the purchase within the next year. Manila was the top location, preferred by 53 per cent.

Zakat definitions
Zakat: an Arabic word meaning ‘to cleanse’ or ‘purification’.
Nisab: the minimum amount that a Muslim must have before being obliged to pay zakat. Traditionally, the nisab threshold was 87.48 grams of gold, or 612.36 grams of silver. The monetary value of the nisab therefore varies by current prices and currencies.
Zakat Al Mal: the ‘cleansing’ of wealth, as one of the five pillars of Islam; a spiritual duty for all Muslims meeting the ‘nisab’ wealth criteria in a lunar year, to pay 2.5 per cent of their wealth in alms to the deserving and needy.
Zakat Al Fitr: a donation to charity given during Ramadan, before Eid Al Fitr, in the form of food. Every adult Muslim who possesses food in excess of the needs of themselves and their family must pay two qadahs (an old measure just over 2 kilograms) of flour, wheat, barley or rice from each person in a household, as a minimum.
