Locals and shop owners in a busy Indian commercial district fled as a fierce inferno tore through the area.

Firefighters were called to Kolkata's packed Bagri market to tackle the flames.

The blaze started on the ground floor of a footwear factory and spread rapidly due to a quantity of combustible material held on the premises.
