DUBAI// A jobless man and his girlfriend accused of taking drugs and having sex outside of marriage have appeared before Dubai Criminal Court.

Prosecutors said Pakistani A A, 34, was in possession of 7.2 grams of heroin and 7.8 grams of amphetamine when he was arrested at his hotel room in Naif in December last year.

M H and his 27-year-old Tajik girlfriend M H both confessed to a charge of consuming drugs and of having consensual sex outside of wedlock.

However A A denied giving M H drugs.

Policeman K A, 24, said officers were tipped off that the couple were using drugs in their hotel room.

“We obtained an arrest warrant after investigations confirmed the tip, then on December 27 last year we went to the Diplomat Hotel where the two were staying,” said K A.

After knocking at door and identifying themselves, the woman stalled officers for about five minutes before she let them in.

“When we got in, the window was open and as we looked down, a bag was on the street just below their window, the bag contained drugs,” said K A, adding that A A said he threw the bag out of the window because he was scared.

K A said more drugs were found in the room, which A A said belonged to him.

The couple were referred to the criminal laboratory which, after examining them both, reported they had consumed drugs and had intercourse recently.

A verdict is expected on March 17.
