SHARJAH // A woman was hit and killed by a speeding motorist Monday while crossing Buheira Corniche Road, while another pedestrian was seriously injured, police said.
The accident was reported to police at around 5.30pm. The victim had been accompanied by another woman while crossing the road to Buhairah Corniche Hotel from an undesignated area, police said. The second woman suffered critical injuries and internal bleeding and was transferred to the nearest hospital, Sharjah Police said.
The motorist was an Arab woman and the two victims, both Ethiopian, were in their thirties, according to a police official.
"The motorist was speeding and failed to abide to traffic rules," the official said. "Due to her negligence and overspeeding, she failed to avoid hitting the two ladies who were randomly crossing the road."
Sharjah Police detained the motorist and a case will be opened at Sharjah Public Prosecution.
