ABU DHABI // A woman who crashed her vehicle into a police car to try to rescue her friend — believing they were a group of attackers — has been handed a three month suspended jail sentence and a Dh500 fine.
L, an Emirati, was accused of endangering the lives of police officers after she intentionally caused the crash.
Her friend and co defendant R, also an Emirati, had fled her family home and police issued a report to find her. So when undercover CID agents spotted her driving in the area they stopped her and demanded her ID.
She told the court that, by mistake, she pulled out L’s ID.
She said she did not know they were police when she called L to come to her rescue because they were not in police uniform and did not declare their identity.
L also said that R called her at midnight after she borrowed her car and told her she was surrounded by a group of men in a suburban area.
She then rushed to her rescue and called the police emergency number twice to report the incident while she was on the way.
Etisalat call records showed that she did call the number.
When she arrived at the scene she pulled her friend with her in the car and reversed towards the police vehicle and hit it.
She argued she did not know they were police because they were undercover and did not present any ID and their car was unmarked.
“She was in a state of terror and emergency to rescue her friend, so when she reversed she was too nervous and accidentally crashed into their car,” argued her defence attorney Tarek Al Serkal.
The court also sentenced R to a suspended three month jail sentence.
