DUBAI // A businesswoman who threw a broken glass at a man accidentally hit a waiter, causing nerve damage to his hand, Dubai Criminal Court was told on Monday.

The Uzbek woman, 40, confessed to a charge of physical assault and another of consuming alcohol without a licence on October 15, 2014. However, she told judges that she did not mean to cause any harm to anyone.

“What happened is there was this Sudanese man who threw the glass at me so I threw it back at him but it accidentally hit the waiter,” said the woman in court on Monday.

The incident happened in a hotel in Muraqqabat and caused the Tunisian waiter a severe cut in his right hand, damaging nerves and leaving him with a 25 per cent permanent disability.

The 29-year-old waiter said that he was aware she did not mean to hit him but that his injury had required surgery and he still suffers from pain.

No explanation was given on why the case has taken almost two years to get to court.

A verdict will be issued on June 2.
