Warning about dangers helium balloons and blimps can pose to aircraft

Tethered helium balloons and advertising blimps from rooftops are dangerous to aircraft, the General Civil Aviation Authority has warned.

The advice follows an increase in problems during National Day celebrations.

The authority said balloons were a particular danger during night flights because they could damage aircraft engines or force pilots into emergency manoeuvres.

The authority said balloons should be no higher than the tallest building in the area, and urged residents to contact airport authorities for guidance before putting them up.
