SHARJAH // Umm al Qaiwain formed an executive council yesterday, becoming the last of the emirates to do so.
Sheikh Saud bin Rashid, the Ruler of Umm al Qaiwain, issued a law establishing the council. Such councils are the largest legislative advisory body at emirate level.
The Ruler also issued an Emiri decree appointing the Crown Prince of Umm al Qaiwain, Sheikh Rashid bin Saud, as the chairman of the executive council.
The law will allow the council to offer consultation about legislation on government affairs, public facilities and economic development projects, as well as to oversee local departments, public institutions and authorities.
"The decree came into effect from the day of its issuance and will be published in the official gazette," a statement on the state news agency WAM said.
The council will hold weekly meetings to discuss issues referred to it by the emirate's departments and governmental authorities concerning the progress of government-sponsored projects and services.
As with other executive councils, its membership would be formed by the heads of local government departments and other members appointed by the Ruler. The Ruler must approve the council's decisions for them to become binding.
