I am an Indian woman who now lives in India. I verbally abused an Emirati man via email and WhatsApp for messing me about. Could I be punished under UAE law even though the crime was not committed there? And could the man have me taken to the UAE to be punished?
The general principle of the penalty code is that its provisions are applied to anyone committing a crime inside the country. The crime is considered to be inside the country if the result of the crime is established or intended to be established inside. So, you could be punished in relation to Article 20 of Law No 5 of 2012, which includes as punishment imprisonment and/or a fine of not less than Dh250,000 and not more than Dh500,000. If the man were to lodge a case, it would be difficult to summon you but you could be arrested upon arrival in the UAE for sentence to be imposed as that may be issued in your absence.
I am on my estranged husband’s visa and, in June, his employment was terminated. My employer has agreed to give me a visa. I found out that my ex-husband had left the country without cancelling my visa and his employer did not cancel his visa either. They are valid until this month. Is there a way I can cancel my visa so that my employer can supply one?
You should approach the residency department of your emirate and file a request to cancel your visa given by your husband. After that, your employer will be free to proceed with a new visa.
