This week’s sermon talks about Luqman the wise, a pious man who was blessed with wisdom and after whom the 31st Quranic chapter was named.

Luqman offered his son a list of advice that today’s parents are encouraged to communicate to their children.

Luqman always called his son “my son” so he would listen carefully. The first advice he gave his son was to warn him of idolatry and polytheism, which Luqman called “the greatest injustice indeed”.

The second piece of advice Luqman gave his son was to remind him of the rights of his parents on him. He describes the hardships mothers face bearing children.

The 14th verse of Luqman’s chapter in the Quran reads: “And We have enjoined on man to be dutiful and good to his parents. His mother bore him upon weakness and hardship.”

Luqman also mentions the total dependence of infants on their mothers.

He says: “Thank Allah, and then your parents.”

Another piece of advice was to establish timely prayers with the best performance. Prayers are the direct connection between human beings and their creator.

“O my son! Offer prayer perfectly.”

Luqman warned his son against being harsh while talking, because this will liken his voice to the braying of a donkey. Shouting offends people, it does not win hearts, rather, it will alienate them.

“And lower your voice. Verily the harshest of all voices is the [braying] of an ass!”

After the advice he offered his son, Luqman recommended patience while implementing them in all matters of life.

“And bear with patience whatever befalls you. Verily, these are some of the important commandments ordered by Allah with no exemption.”

Patience is a righteous act rewarded by Allah.
