ABU DHABI // Tens of thousands of worshippers around the country gathered today on Good Friday to pray for peace and welfare in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on churches in Egypt.
Egyptian Copts who gathered at Saint Anthony Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in Abu Dhabi were saddened by the terrorist attacks on shrines back home but prayed that God might “guide wrongdoers to the true path”.
Egyptian Hanna Mikhail, who attended the Coptic church for Good Friday, said she spent her time praying for the families of the 47 people who were killed in two ISIL bombings on churches in Egypt’s cities of Tanta and Alexandria.
“We live here in the UAE and feel great joy of religious freedom and all communities tolerantly living together and practising their beliefs freely,” Ms Mikhail said, “We want similar peace and tranquillity back home in Egypt. Mostly I prayed today for peace to prevail all around the world.”
It was not only Coptic Christians that prayed for the victims as worshippers from other denominations and priests denounced the attack.
Ashaia Ameen Haroun, member of the committee of St Anthony Coptic Orthodox Cathedral, said that although it was difficult to comprehend people being murdered in a place of worship, the attackers were not achieving their goal.
“This guy [attacker] who did that he thinks that he is doing good to God but God doesn’t elect him to do that.”
Mr Haroun believed that the attackers made the victim’s journey to Heaven easier and quicker.
“But if you are killed while performing your prayers you are a martyr.”
Services at St Anthony Coptic church were performed in Arabic and Coptic.
The culture of tolerance and religious freedom was cherished by the Christian worshippers who marked Good Friday.
In Dubai, masses were held in several languages including Arabic, English, Malayalam, Tamil, Sri Lankan and Urdu.
Sameh Talat, an Egyptian volunteer at St Mina Coptic Orthodox Church, spent the holy day in organising the event as a way of prayer.
“It is an activity in the church and we come on the occasions to organise the events. The service feeling is as the feeling of prayer and it is a duty,” the 38-year-old said.
Approximately 25,000 to 30,000 Egyptian Christian Copts reside in the UAE.
“Good Friday comes once every year, and I do feel on this day how much the Lord suffered and today is the commemoration day of all his pain,” he said.
In Dubai, about 50,000 Christians from various nationalities and seven denominations attended church services.
Filipino Bryn Napoles, 37, arrived at St Joseph’s Cathedral in Abu Dhabi. He said: “I prayed for peace for all over the world. The world needs this today.”
Mr Napoles said religion is a way for people all around the world to understand each other and spread peace and he condemned those who looked to disrupt it.
“Today is special day for us all so I also asked God to shower good health and wealth on all of us,” Mr Napoles said.
Worshippers who gathered at St Stephen’s Church in Abu Dhabi denounced attacks on holy places and the murder of innocent people.
An Indian woman, Mayookha Arun, 24, who came from Gayathi in Al Dhafra Region to Abu Dhabi’s St Joseph’s said: “Today we are weeping because the Lord suffered and was crucified.”
“We want happiness and to lead a peaceful life,” said Ms Arun, who has lived in Abu Dhabi for four years.
Roshan Chacko, from India, said: “I love celebrating the special day in Dubai where we join with people from 80 nationalities and other denominations.”

His life in brief: Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school. He was arrested several times by Israel for what were deemed to be inciteful poems. Most of his work focused on the love and yearning for his homeland, and he was regarded the Palestinian poet of resistance. Over the course of his life, he published more than 30 poetry collections and books of prose, with his work translated into more than 20 languages. Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife. Darwish died on August 9, 2008 after undergoing heart surgery in the United States. He was later buried in Ramallah where a shrine was erected in his honour.

Mercer, the investment consulting arm of US services company Marsh & McLennan, expects its wealth division to at least double its assets under management (AUM) in the Middle East as wealth in the region continues to grow despite economic headwinds, a company official said.
Mercer Wealth, which globally has $160 billion in AUM, plans to boost its AUM in the region to $2-$3bn in the next 2-3 years from the present $1bn, said Yasir AbuShaban, a Dubai-based principal with Mercer Wealth.
“Within the next two to three years, we are looking at reaching $2 to $3 billion as a conservative estimate and we do see an opportunity to do so,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Mercer does not directly make investments, but allocates clients’ money they have discretion to, to professional asset managers. They also provide advice to clients.
“We have buying power. We can negotiate on their (client’s) behalf with asset managers to provide them lower fees than they otherwise would have to get on their own,” he added.
Mercer Wealth’s clients include sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and insurance companies among others.
From its office in Dubai, Mercer also looks after Africa, India and Turkey, where they also see opportunity for growth.
Wealth creation in Middle East and Africa (MEA) grew 8.5 per cent to $8.1 trillion last year from $7.5tn in 2015, higher than last year’s global average of 6 per cent and the second-highest growth in a region after Asia-Pacific which grew 9.9 per cent, according to consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG). In the region, where wealth grew just 1.9 per cent in 2015 compared with 2014, a pickup in oil prices has helped in wealth generation.
BCG is forecasting MEA wealth will rise to $12tn by 2021, growing at an annual average of 8 per cent.
Drivers of wealth generation in the region will be split evenly between new wealth creation and growth of performance of existing assets, according to BCG.
Another general trend in the region is clients’ looking for a comprehensive approach to investing, according to Mr AbuShaban.
“Institutional investors or some of the families are seeing a slowdown in the available capital they have to invest and in that sense they are looking at optimizing the way they manage their portfolios and making sure they are not investing haphazardly and different parts of their investment are working together,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Some clients also have a higher appetite for risk, given the low interest-rate environment that does not provide enough yield for some institutional investors. These clients are keen to invest in illiquid assets, such as private equity and infrastructure.
“What we have seen is a desire for higher returns in what has been a low-return environment specifically in various fixed income or bonds,” he said.
“In this environment, we have seen a de facto increase in the risk that clients are taking in things like illiquid investments, private equity investments, infrastructure and private debt, those kind of investments were higher illiquidity results in incrementally higher returns.”
The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, one of the largest sovereign wealth funds, said in its 2016 report that has gradually increased its exposure in direct private equity and private credit transactions, mainly in Asian markets and especially in China and India. The authority’s private equity department focused on structured equities owing to “their defensive characteristics.”
