DUBAI // A salesman who stole 654 television sets worth Dh878,000 from a company’s warehouse was sentenced to two years in jail.
Dubai Criminal Court heard that Indian G B, 46, confessed to stealing the sets on February 7 with the help of others who remain at large.
Witness M N, 39, said he was on his way home when he passed by the warehouse in Al Qusais and noticed the lights were on.
“I called the store supervisor but he told me he turned off the lights, closed the warehouse and left. So I checked and found the place empty,” he said, adding that he called police.
Officer M A, 23, said the defendant admitted to stealing from the warehouse, with the help of a friend, R, and four unidentified men.
The gang loaded the electronics on three pick-up trucks before moving them to a private warehouse rented by the defendant.
Some of the stolen items were sold for cheaper prices, records show.
“We found 404 TV sets and a vacuum cleaner in G B’s warehouse. We also found two Samsung TV sets and another Sony when we arrested the defendant at his residence in Al Rashidiyah,” said the policeman.
The police returned 405 stolen items to the owner, worth nearly Dh500,000.
G B denied the charges in court. However, he was convicted and sentenced to two years to be followed by deportation.
