DUBAI // Twin sisters entered the country with sweets containing hashish that were given to them by their father, court has been told.
“We were not aware they contained hashish,” the 20-year-old South Africans told the Dubai Criminal Court.
On July 11 at Dubai International Airport, one of the girls was found with 20 pieces of candy that contained hashish weighing 326 grams, while her sister was caught with 19 pieces of the same candy containing 297g.
Their lawyer told the court the two did not have any criminal intention and did not know they were carrying drugs.
“During their arrest and questioning they didn’t know about the hashish,” he said.
“It was not easy for them to understand why they were being held and there was no mention of the hashish as part of the ingredients of the candy they carried, so they did not know they carried something banned.”
A verdict is expected on November 11.
