SHARJAH // The speed limit on Maliha Road has been lowered from 120 kph to 100 kph.

The decision was taken based on field research by the Traffic and Patrols Department at Sharjah Police, looking particularly at the stretch of road between Al Badea Bridge and the Sheikh Khalifa Road exit.

The study reviewed speed limits on a number of roads in the emirate where fatal accidents have occurred. Its aim is to increase traffic safety along these roads and reduce the number of serious accidents.

Lt Colonel Dr Ahmed Al Naoor, acting director of Traffic and Patrols Department for Sharjah Police, said the speed limit was lowered in line with the Ministry of Interior’s goal of enhancing traffic safety.

Excessive speed is one of the main causes of accidents.

Lt Col Al Naoor called upon drivers to abide by speed limits to assure they remain safe and help reduce any loss of life, reported Wam, the sate news agency.

Last month, police lowered the speed limit on the Al Quta — Nazwa Road in the central region of Sharjah after more than 3,000 offences for speeding in a single weekend.

Motorists using the busy road can now drive no faster than 100 kph, down from 120 kph, after mobile speed radars caught 1,584 offences while fixed radars recorded another 1,454 over two days.
