DUBAI // A Dh335 million contract to upgrade roads in Business Bay has been awarded by the Roads and Transport Authority.
The project, scheduled to be completed in 2018, involves building a 295-metre bridge at the junction of Al Meydan and Al Saada streets, and another 240-metre bridge with three lanes in each direction.
Three underpasses will also be built. The first underpass will provide left-hand turns from Al Saada Street in the direction of Al Meydan Street to ease traffic snarls during peak travel periods.
The second underpass, at Al Saada Street, will have two lanes in each direction. The third is designated for the crossing of horses at Godolphin Stables.
“The project also includes roadworks spanning 4 kilometres with lanes ranging from three to four in each direction, in addition to service roads in most areas of the project,” said Mattar Al Tayer, director general and chairman of the RTA.
“Works include upgrading and shifting utility lines in the area, as well as street lighting and directional signs.”
The RTA has already completed more than 31 per cent of the parallel roads improvement project in the Godolphin area.
“The parallel roads project is one of the vital projects being undertaken by RTA to ease congestion on Sheikh Zayed Road,” Mr Al Tayer said.
“This traffic corridor, which comprises three lanes in each direction, extends 108km from Sheikh Rashid Road in the north up to the entrance of Abu Dhabi emirate.”
The project covers at-grade junctions at the intersections of parallel roads with the crossing roads extending 42km.
