Public bus journeys around Sharjah will cost Dh1 more after the emirate’s Roads and Transport Authority introduced new fares for paper tickets, effective from this month.
However, the price of the e-payment “Sayer” card remains unchanged.
Abdel Aziz Al Jarwan, director of transportation affairs at the RTA, said the increase of paper ticket prices aims to increase the percentage of Sayer card users from 8 per cent to more than 50 per cent in a short period of time, and increase the number of regular users of public transportation.
About 16,000 people use public transportation in Sharjah each day on 11 routes, reported Al Ittihad, the Arabic-language sister paper of The National.
