ABU DHABI // Salman Khan thinks nothing of driving in excess of 200 kilometres an hour – because he knows he will get away with it.
The Indian expatriate, 26, said he was often tempted to show off when driving his 2013 Dodge Charger.
“More often than most, impatient drivers like me happen to have muscle cars,” he said.
“I have also driven at 210kph between radars on the motorway between Abu Dhabi and Dubai because there are long distances between one camera and the other.
Mr Khan said muscle cars increased the testosterone level of their drivers, causing them to drive at speed.

“The UAE’s long, wide and well-maintained roads add to rash drivers’ need for speed,” he added.
In Dubai, when drivers of muscle cars have female company, “it is worth showing off”.
Drivers’ lust for speed had led to incidents of road rage, said Mr Khan, adding that he had been guilty of that himself.
“When a muscle car driver confronts another one on the road, things get worse,” he said.
“For example, a guy in front is driving at 100kph in the fast lane on a road where the speed limit is 120kph. That gets us annoyed.
“Otherwise it is usually the younger guys with fancy cars who have attitude problems.
“It is mostly the ones driving muscle cars that cut into queues and leave little spacing.
“I do that too, but quite smoothly and only to save my frustration.”

Five famous companies founded by teens
There are numerous success stories of teen businesses that were created in college dorm rooms and other modest circumstances. Below are some of the most recognisable names in the industry:
- Facebook: Mark Zuckerberg and his friends started Facebook when he was a 19-year-old Harvard undergraduate.
- Dell: When Michael Dell was an undergraduate student at Texas University in 1984, he started upgrading computers for profit. He starting working full-time on his business when he was 19. Eventually, his company became the Dell Computer Corporation and then Dell Inc.
- Subway: Fred DeLuca opened the first Subway restaurant when he was 17. In 1965, Mr DeLuca needed extra money for college, so he decided to open his own business. Peter Buck, a family friend, lent him $1,000 and together, they opened Pete’s Super Submarines. A few years later, the company was rebranded and called Subway.
- Mashable: In 2005, Pete Cashmore created Mashable in Scotland when he was a teenager. The site was then a technology blog. Over the next few decades, Mr Cashmore has turned Mashable into a global media company.
- Oculus VR: Palmer Luckey founded Oculus VR in June 2012, when he was 19. In August that year, Oculus launched its Kickstarter campaign and raised more than $1 million in three days. Facebook bought Oculus for $2 billion two years later.

Emiratisation was introduced in the UAE more than 10 years ago
It aims to boost the number of citizens in the workforce particularly in the private sector.

What is Genes in Space?
Genes in Space is an annual competition first launched by the UAE Space Agency, The National and Boeing in 2015.
It challenges school pupils to design experiments to be conducted in space and it aims to encourage future talent for the UAE’s fledgling space industry. It is the first of its kind in the UAE and, as well as encouraging talent, it also aims to raise interest and awareness among the general population about space exploration.
