Fog warning issued for UAE drivers as long weekend ends

The National Centre of Meteorology has issued a weather alert and urged drivers to take care on the roads on the return to work

Drivers are being warned that fog could be on the horizon for the Tuesday morning commute.

Weather experts have issued a early morning fog warning as motorists took to the roads at the end of the long weekend in the UAE.

Scores of workers were back on the daily commute this morning following the conclusion of National Day celebrations - and they are being urged to brace themselves for blankets of fog in many areas.

The National Centre of Meteorology said visibility will be reduced to less than 1,000 metres in some coastal and inland areas of the country from 1am until 9am on Tuesday.

Overnight fog lingered into the morning, hanging low and reducing visibility in some areas, particularly in the north of the country.

Traffic was moving, slowly, both in and out of Abu Dhabi this morning. There were rush hour delays in Dubai, although commuters said traffic was not as busy as usual following a long weekend.

Drivers are being asked to take the potentially hazardous weather conditions into consideration when behind the wheel, keeping safe distances from other vehicles and following traffic regulations.

Only last month Abu Dhabi Police reminded motorists not to use their hazard lights while driving in foggy conditions.

Hazard lights are commonly used when visibility on roads is poor but it can confuse surrounding motorists who have no way of knowing which direction a driver will turn or whether there is trouble ahead, police said.
