DUBAI // February 4 next year will be car-free day in Dubai.

Alya Al Harmoudi, Director of Environment Department at the emirate’s municipality, urged all institutions to participate in the initiative, being held for the 6th consecutive year, and encourage their staff to use public transport to get to work.

Ms Al Harmoudi said the initiative will be held to coincide with National Environment Day to reflect the commitment to eco-friendly practices by contributing to reducing traffic jams.

She noted that in the first year, only one government department, the municipality, took part in the initiative with the number of cars not used standing at 1,000; while 66 bodies, public and private, participated in the initiative in its fifth year, taking 7,000 cars off the road.
