ABU DHABI // Gold-and-white taxis will disappear from the streets of Abu Dhabi next year.
Fewer than 800 of the original 8,000 remain in the emirate, and the drivers' permits will expire on December 31.
Each cab is sponsored by an Emirati owner. Drivers pay the sponsor a monthly fee and keep the rest of their earnings.
TransAD started phasing out the taxis in 2007 and introduced franchise taxi companies. The authority will compensate licence owners, paying Dh1,000 to each for 25 years. Drivers can sell their licence to TransAD for Dh100,000 from next year.
TransAD will not offer any compensation to the drivers.
"But we are offering the drivers to join the franchises," said Mohammed Al Hosani, TransAD director of franchise and licensing.
Drivers who do not read Arabic or English will not be eligible to join, he said.
The old taxis are loved and hated by passengers for their personalised interiors and bargained fares. Drivers choose their own hours, their own lodgings and, often, their customers.
Passengers are urged to book taxis in advance to reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions, said Mr Al Hosani. Currently, only 2 per cent of taxi rides are pre-booked.
Abu Dhabi has a fleet of 7,147 taxis that can be booked by calling 600 535353.

He was prolific for a season at Al Wasl in the Arabian Gulf League in 2012/13. He returned for one season with Fujairah, whom he left to join Pune.

WHY AAYAN IS 'PERFECT EXAMPLE'
David White might be new to the country, but he has clearly already built up an affinity with the place.
After the UAE shocked Pakistan in the semi-final of the Under 19 Asia Cup last month, White was hugged on the field by Aayan Khan, the team’s captain.
White suggests that was more a sign of Aayan’s amiability than anything else. But he believes the young all-rounder, who was part of the winning Gulf Giants team last year, is just the sort of player the country should be seeking to produce via the ILT20.
“He is a delightful young man,” White said. “He played in the competition last year at 17, and look at his development from there till now, and where he is representing the UAE.
“He was influential in the U19 team which beat Pakistan. He is the perfect example of what we are all trying to achieve here.
“It is about the development of players who are going to represent the UAE and go on to help make UAE a force in world cricket.”
The Afghan connection
The influx of talented young Afghan players to UAE cricket could have a big impact on the fortunes of both countries. Here are three Emirates-based players to watch out for.
Hassan Khan Eisakhil
Mohammed Nabi is still proving his worth at the top level but there is another reason he is raging against the idea of retirement. If the allrounder hangs on a little bit longer, he might be able to play in the same team as his son, Hassan Khan. The family live in Ajman and train in Sharjah.
Masood Gurbaz
The opening batter, who trains at Sharjah Cricket Academy, is another player who is a part of a famous family. His brother, Rahmanullah, was an IPL winner with Kolkata Knight Riders, and opens the batting with distinction for Afghanistan.
Omid Rahman
The fast bowler became a pioneer earlier this year when he became the first Afghan to represent the UAE. He showed great promise in doing so, too, playing a key role in the senior team’s qualification for the Asia Cup in Muscat recently.
