DUBAI // A hydrogen and electric-powered trolley tram covering three stations over a kilometre will soon roll out in Downtown Dubai.
The system is being assembled on site and will soon be tested, developer Emaar said on Monday. Work on the stations and depot is under way with plans to cover seven kilometres across the 500-acre Downtown Dubai area.
In the first phase, the red and gold double-decker trolley will pass Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, Dubai Fountain, Souk Al Bahar and Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard.
Each trolley tram can carry 74 passengers in open-deck or air-conditioned seating.
“The Dubai Trolley is an innovative and sustainable mode of transit that fits perfectly with requirements of visitors and residents alike in Downtown Dubai,” said Ahmad Al Matrooshi, managing director of Emaar Properties. The Dubai Trolley will travel at 16km per hour and has a maximum speed of 80km per hour.
