A plan to build 19 footbridges this year and next across Dubai has been approved by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

This year seven bridges will be built, with the remaining 12 next year.

Mattar Al Tayer, the RTA chairman, said the plan was intended to provide ways for pedestrians to cross the roads safely.

He added that the new bridges would be built at vital sites that had been selected based on use by pedestrians, places where there were markets and busy retail establishments, and frequent hotspots for pedestrian accidents.
