DUBAI // Thousands of labourers in Dubai are to be taught about safely crossing busy roads.

The three-month campaign will see 30,000 told about using overpasses to prevent fines for jaywalking and to stop them becoming another road statistic.

Col Jamal Al Bannai, deputy director of the General Department of Traffic, said that four labourers were involved in run-over incidents last year, a decrease from 13 in 2013.

He also said that 66,822 people were fined for jaywalking last year, up from 50,371 in 2013.

The fine for drivers not giving pedestrians the right of way is Dh500, while a jaywalker could be fined Dh200. Last year, 7,352 motorists were fined for not giving way, up from 3,574 in 2013.

The police, in cooperation with the Ministry of Labour, will be handing out brochures and giving lectures to labourers.
