A hapless motorist was forced to swim to safety after losing control of his car and hurtling into Dubai Creek.

Emergency services raced to the scene after receiving reports a vehicle had plunged into the waters shortly before midnight on Tuesday.

“Our patrols were at the location in four minutes,” said Lt Col Ali Al Naqbi, head of the Department of Maritime Rescue.

He said the driver had managed to get out of the vehicle and reach dry land before it sank to the bottom of the creek.

Divers located the car, which was then pulled out of the water by a crane.

"They found the car in the bottom of the creek 130 metres away from where it fell," said the official.

"It was pulled out from a 37-metre depth."

He said the driver had lost control of the car due to a lack of care and attention while behind the wheel.
