Boy, 7, loses leg after car crash in UAQ

UMM AL QUWAIN // A seven-year-old Arab boy had one of his legs amputated in hospital after being thrown from a speeding car.

The car was being driven by the boy’s older brother, who does not have a licence, when the accident happened at about 4pm on Saturday in the Bayata area, said Lt Col Saeed Obaid Eiran, from Umm Al Quwain traffic police.

“The accident happened after the vehicle deviated from the road and the young teenage driver could not control it,” said Lt Col Eiran. “In the vehicle there was a teenage driver, another teenage passenger and the seven-year-old boy.”

The boy was thrown from the car as it overturned and he suffered serious injuries. Doctors at UAQ hospital had to amputate the leg in order to save his life, said Lt Col Eiran. He is being kept in the intensive care unit. The two teenagers are also being treated at the same hospital for moderate injuries.

Lt Col Eiran urged parents not to let their children drive if they do not have a licence. He also urged young drivers who have a licence to abide by the traffic rules and not to speed.
