An awareness campaign for jet ski owners called “Minimise Risk, Maximise Fun” was launched by the Department of Transport at Al Maya Island recently.

Activities included lectures on the prohibited areas for jet skis; a presentation on how to use safety equipment and the importance of wearing a life jacket and protective helmet; and a demonstration on safety while practicing the sport.

Representatives from the Critical Infrastructure and Coastal Protection Authority and the Abu Dhabi Ports Company who attended the event called on all personal watercraft users to respect regulations, especially in the merchant marine channels, to preserve life and property.

Humaid Al Hameli, acting director of maritime transport at the DoT, said they were working on updating the map to show the locations where jet ski activities are prohibited.

“Although riding personal watercrafts is a fun sport that attracts many people, this hobby can be risky if users do not abide by safety requirements in order to preserve their personal well being, encourage tourism and maintain the marine environment,” he said.
