Abu Dhabi motorists have long relied on the SMS parking payment service to save themselves a sprint to the car in the midday sun. Until now, this service was only available to those with Abu-Dhabi registered number plates.

The Department of Transport is about to make things easier for out-of-towners by introducing a new code that allows motorists driving any UAE-registered vehicle to pay for parking by SMS.

The Department of Transport launches its new SMS parking payment system on Sunday, January 28. Prior registration is not required.

The new format will be: (city code and plate category) space (plate number) space (S or P for standard or premium) SPACE (duration in hours).

For example, a driver with an Abu Dhabi registered, series-five licence plate numbered 00000 who wants  standard parking for an hour, would text: AUH5 00000 S1.

The driver of A-series Dubai-registered plate using premium parking for two hours would text, DXBA 00000 P2.

City codes are AUH for Abu Dhabi, DXB for Dubai, SHJ for Sharjah, AJM for Ajman, UAQ for Umm Al Quwain, RAK for Ras Al Khaimah, FUJ for Fujairah.

The old service will run alongside the new system.
