Tolerance needed to curb ‘rise in negative rhetoric’, Sheikha Lubna says

DUBAI // Tolerance must be promoted to curb a rise in negative rhetoric, discrimination and sectarianism, Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi has said.

Cultural content must be enriched and dialogue must be promoted, said Sheikha Lubna, Minister of State for Tolerance, speaking on Tuesday at the Arab Media Forum.

“If we don’t get back to the values we have, the youth may start thinking about something different elsewhere,” she said.

“So it’s very important for the UAE and for all countries to focus on this – to give a sense of belonging to future generations and instil tolerance in them, to ensure they steer clear from hatred.”

Last year, the UAE created new Cabinet positions for ministers of state for tolerance and happiness.

“Many people wondered after the new Cabinet formation why the UAE would establish a Ministry for Tolerance, because the country is tolerant by nature,” Sheikha Lubna said.

“Some people may wonder if establishing such a ministry meant there was a need for reform, but this is different for us.

“In the light of recent developments and the negative tone we increasingly witness worldwide, as well as the very individualistic language adopted by many countries and communities, many people don’t think about how important it is to view how these changes affect and undermine values.”

The UAE aims to protect its youth and ensure a bright future for them, said Sheikha Lubna.

“My ministry was established because there was a need for intellectual development as we face many challenges worldwide in religion and culture,” she said.

“At a certain point, they may affect us, so it’s very important to have an institutionalised framework. We have 200 nationalities here, so we do have a sound equation for tolerance and peaceful coexistence and we want to maintain this for future generations.”

Sheikha Lubna said media should propagate the true image of the Arab world and address misconceptions.

“We have a great responsibility to influence young people and global media,” she said.

“Social media pioneers affect hundreds of millions of people, so it’s critical they give out sound information, [as] it affects thinking, coexistence and the morals of youth.”
