ABU DHABI // A teenager accused of trying to join ISIL claimed he had travelled overseas only as a tourist.
Emirati S Y K appeared at the Federal Supreme Court on Monday, charged with trying to join a terrorist organisation.
The court heard that he was arrested in Amman.
His lawyer, Yousef Al Ali, insisted the 19-year-old had gone to Jordan to visit Al Aqabah, “a known tourist destination”.
“He was arrested and his electronic devices were confiscated. But they did not find any evidence and he was returned to the UAE.”
Mr Al Ali said a smartphone, a camera and laptop all contained nothing that suggested the defendant supported ISIL.
The court also heard from S Y K’s mother, who was asked if she knew her son was planning on joining a terrorist group.
She had not been aware of his trip and said it was “impossible” that he would consider joining such a group.
She said that he had asked for money, which was provided, but did not reveal the amount.
At previous hearings, witnesses said the defendant had been indoctrinated in extremist beliefs through the internet. He had also attended lectures on the subject.
The verdict will be announced on September 24.
