DUBAI // A policeman who forged an official letter in an attempt to win custody of his children has been given a year’s suspended sentence.

The 43-year-old Emirati was sentenced in his absence as he did not show up in court to enter a plea against a charge of forging an official document or to hear the verdict.

The officer divorced his first wife in 2001 and when he tried to win custody of their children, he forged a letter stating that he had not remarried. He had in fact married his second wife in 2004.

Two compatriots, aged 57 and 35, also policemen, denied charges of aiding and abetting in making the forgery in November 2014. Each was given a suspended sentence of three months.

The men claimed they were unaware the officer had remarried.
