Student didn’t know it was marijuana he was smoking, hears Dubai court

DUBAI// A 21-year-old Canadian student denied knowingly smoking a marijuana cigarette when he appeared at the Dubai Criminal Court.

“No, I didn’t possess or consume, I didn’t know that it was marijuana,” W M told judges on Wednesday.

Prosecutors charged him with possessing a cigarette that contained tobacco mixed with 0.72 grams of marijuana. They also charged him with consuming marijuana on December 1 last year. He denied both charges.

The court was told that when W M was arrested in The Springs community he was high on drugs. Prosecutors said W M confessed the drugs belonged to him during interrogations and told officers it was for his personal use.

When referred to the criminal lab for a urine test, his results came back positive for traces of marijuana.

The next hearing will be on March 23.
