DUBAI // A student who assaulted a 45-year-old man, causing him 15 per cent permanent disability, was sentenced to one year in jail in absentia on Wednesday morning.
The Dubai Criminal Court heard that on May 17, 2012, Emirati JA, 25, headed to the home of a man identified in police records as YY, planning to assault him with a sword.
When the defendant arrived, YY ran into his home and hid, while the man in his company, SA, 45, remained outside and was assaulted by the student.
The victim was hit by the sword on the left hand, which has left him weak and unable to grip.
The criminal lab report evaluated this as a 15 per cent permanent disability.
Records did not mention the reason behind the attack.
The defendant was not present to enter a plea last December and was not present again to hear the verdict.

Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.

A worker is categorised as skilled by the MOHRE based on nine levels given in the International Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO) issued by the International Labour Organisation.
