More than 7,000 application forms were handed out to the stateless people known as bidoon yesterday on the first day of registration for them to become Emirati citizens. Many queued for hours for the chance to gain citizenship of a country they have called home for decades, or even their whole lives. Some, however, were turned away and told to come back today after registration centres ran out of application forms or did not receive them in time.
Some officials resorted to taking electronic applications rather than send away people who had travelled from other emirates. Police said the problems stemmed partly from personal rivalries within some families, whose members refused to register together and insisted on separate application forms, despite being told that only one would be available for each family. "There was a shortage of forms at all four registration centres due to the fact that some were taking more forms than they needed to," said Brig Gen Nasser al Minhali, head of the Naturalisation and Residency Department.
He said there was extreme pressure at the registration area in Sharjah, where 2,700 people registered. Almost 2,000 bidoon registered in Dubai, while the Abu Dhabi centre handled 1,746 people. "I predicted there would be a commotion, which is why I wanted to be on time," said Marwan Abdullah, 42, a father of five. "This would change everything for us and for our children," said Rashid Mohammed, 37, who was born in the UAE. "Being Emirati would be like being born again."
Um Amar, 70, stood patiently in line for her turn to come. "My husband died here many years ago awaiting this day to come," she said. "For him it never did, but now for us, Inshallah it will." In Ajman, officials handed out 1,478 applications with few problems. Mohammed Amin, who registered in another centre, said he spent four decades waiting for this day to come. "I always had trust in our leaders," he said. "I knew that if I missed it, my sons would one day be locals."

WHAT ARE NFTs?
Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are tokens that represent ownership of unique items. They allow the tokenisation of things such as art, collectibles and even real estate.
An NFT can have only one official owner at one time. And since they're minted and secured on the Ethereum blockchain, no one can modify the record of ownership, not even copy-paste it into a new one.
This means NFTs are not interchangeable and cannot be exchanged with other items. In contrast, fungible items, such as fiat currencies, can be exchanged because their value defines them rather than their unique properties.
Dr Amal Khalid Alias revealed a recent case of a woman with daughters, who specifically wanted a boy.
A semen analysis of the father showed abnormal sperm so the couple required IVF.
Out of 21 eggs collected, six were unused leaving 15 suitable for IVF.
A specific procedure was used, called intracytoplasmic sperm injection where a single sperm cell is inserted into the egg.
On day three of the process, 14 embryos were biopsied for gender selection.
The next day, a pre-implantation genetic report revealed four normal male embryos, three female and seven abnormal samples.
Day five of the treatment saw two male embryos transferred to the patient.
The woman recorded a positive pregnancy test two weeks later.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.
