DUBAI // A mother has been ordered to pay Dh252,000 in blood money after she caused the death of a pregnant woman, her unborn child and a young girl in a road accident.
The five-month pregnant woman, 27, her unborn child and her two-year-old daughter all died when their car, which was being driven by the dead woman’s husband, crashed on Emirates Road last December. The 37-year-old woman driver of the other vehicle also caused injury to her own two daughters. She and the pregant woman’s husband were convicted by Dubai Traffic Court of causing the accident.
A report said the woman driver was 60 per cent responsible for the accident while the husband was 40 per cent at fault.
The court said the woman was driving recklessly and speeding, while the husband was driving at 50kph, which is below the minimum speed.
The woman was fined Dh10,000, ordered to pay Dh252,000 in blood money, or diyya, to the family of the victims and had her driving licence suspended for three months.
The pregnant woman’s husband, 34, was fined Dh6,000 and ordered to pay Dh168,000 in blood money to his wife’s family. His licence was also suspended for three months.
The only other time an order for diyya to be paid for an unborn child was in Dubai was after a car accident in 2009.
