Speed limit reduced on Abu Dhabi road

The speed limit on the Al Fayah-Seih Shaib Road outside Abu Dhabi has been reduced to 80kph from 100kph for all light and heavy vehicles, police said.

The road splits off from the Abu Dhabi-Al Ain road and runs inland through farming land.

Colonel Ahmad Al Shahi, director of the Abu Dhabi Traffic and Patrols Directorate, said that a recent study showed that the number of accidents recorded on Al Fayah-Seih Shaib Road increased during the first half of 2017.

“We call on motorists to abide by the new speed limit which was reduced from 100km/h to 80km/h and to observe other traffic rules and regulations which aim to save lives and boost traffic safety on roads,” he said.

The decision came into effect on September 1.

More police patrols and speed cameras were expected to be installed along the Abu Dhabi-Sila and Abu Dhabi-Al Ain Road.

Separately, Dubai Police had said it would introduce point-to-point speed cameras, which calculate the average speed of vehicles, to monitor drivers who accelerate between two speed cameras on roads where accidents are common.

The Federal Traffic Council in April last year suggested detaining people who did not follow the rules of the road or who broke the speed limit by more than 60km/h.
