Six children attending Al Murooj kindergarten, in Kalba, got food poisoning after eating at the school canteen. They were immediately transferred to Kalba Hospital suffering from vomiting and diarrhoea, Al Ittihad, the Arabic-language sister paper of The National reported.
The health department at Kalba Municipality took samples from the meals eaten and sent them to Sharjah Municipality’s food laboratory to try to identify the cause of the poisoning.
Obeid Freish, Kalba Hospital’s director, said the children underwent tests upon arrival. One was released from hospital on Tuesday and the others the following day after a specialist concluded they were no longer at risk.
Abdullah Al Lughani, the deputy director of Sharjah Educational Zone, said that the poisoning was probably caused by food the children had brought with them from home, adding that out of a class of 25 pupils, no one else fell ill after eating at the canteen.
“The children who got home-packed lunches are the only ones who got sick. ,” she said.
Inspectors from the municipality searched the canteen and found no evidence of negligence that may have contributed to food poisoning.
