DUBAI // A cafe has been ordered to close down for 10 days after a video was posted on social media showing employees preparing shawarma in unhygienic conditions.

Dubai Municipality said it subsequently revoked the restaurant’s operating licence after a number of health violations were discovered.

Sultan Al Taher, head of food inspection, said: “The municipality takes stringent measures against any wrongdoing, as was the case with the cafeteria.”

Al Ittihad, the sister newspaper of The National, reported that the cafe had reopened after improving sanitary conditions and appointing a new health supervisor.

The municipality is currently undertaking inspections of restaurants in industrial and remote areas to ensure they adhere to health and safety regulations. It has also organised mandatory training for workers in food establishments.

Mr Al Taher encouraged customers to report any health violations to the municipality.
