ABU DHABI // The man who fell just short of becoming the first democratically elected president of Egypt, Ahmed Shafiq, reportedly flew into Abu Dhabi yesterday morning.
His arrival was said to have occurred hours after an investigation was launched into claims that he wasted public funds during his term as civil aviation minister.
Mr Shafiq, who was the last prime minister under Hosni Mubarak's rule, boarded an Etihad plane with two of his three daughters and three grandchildren, reports say.
It was not clear how long he will stay in the Emirates.
Mr Shafiq, 70, narrowly lost the vote to the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohammed Morsi in results announced on Sunday.
Some reports said Mr Shafiq will head to Saudi Arabia to perform the Umrah pilgrimage.
