ABU DHABI // Seven youngsters, accused of reckless driving and disobeying police, have been sentenced to three years and five months in prison and fined Dh12,000 by the Bani Yas Criminal Court.
The list of charges for the drivers, aged between 18 and 24, also includes endangering lives, assaulting public employees, driving a car without number plate and damaging police vehicles.
According to Al Ittihad, The National's Arabic sister-publication, police were notified that a car without a licence plate was involved in unsafe driving that endangered people's lives and caused a lot of noise. The police found the car in question, but the driver refused to obey the policemen to pull over, hitting the patrol vehicle instead and drove away.
Search operations led police to find a similar car without number plates, which also refused to stop, hit the patrol vehicle and drove away, with the person sitting in the passenger seat using an inappropriate gesture towards the police officers.
The arrest showed that it was another car, while the first car pulled over in a remote location where the driver and passengers altered its appearance and moved it to a farm.
