DUBAI// A 29-year-old salesman waited for a lift to open up before he snatched a gold necklace from the neck of a woman in the lift with him, heard the Dubai Criminal Court.
The woman was returning home at nearly 5pm on December 18 last year when she took the lift along with the Pakistani defendant H A.
She said that as the door to the lift opened up he pulled a necklace worth Dh5,000 from her neck and ran out. “I chased him screaming for any help i can get then a man heard me and chased the thief then caught him,” said indian S P, 37.
Police was contacted and when they came and questioned the man he confessed.
“I am not a thief, this was a one time mistake and for that I apologise,” said the defendant in court on Thursday morning.
Prosecutors said that when he confessed to them he said he was going through financial difficulties and had problems at his work as well which made him carry out the theft.
He awaits a verdict on March 30.
