Animal lovers are being urged to register rescued pets with the government - with the number of strays being adopted in the city on the rise.
Tadweer, the emirate's waste management authority, said that all domestic animals should be taken for veterinary testing at the Falcon Hospital, where a medical checkup will be provided for a nominal fee.
"With an increasing number of people in Abu Dhabi now adopting stray animals as pets, Tadweer is keen to ensure their safety and protect the community from any contagious diseases that stray animals may carry,” said Mohammed Al Marzouqi, the pest control project director at Tadweer, the Centre of Waste Management-Abu Dhabi.
It is illegal to keep animals in villas and flats without a municipality permit.
Law No. 2 of 2012 on animal control states the requirements for issuing registration certificates for acquiring and keeping animals.
Strays captured by Tadweer are given medical checkups at the Falcon Hospital. Those found to be free of disease are released back to their original locations, said Tadweer in a statement.

What is an FTO Designation?
FTO designations impose immigration restrictions on members of the organisation simply by virtue of their membership and triggers a criminal prohibition on knowingly providing material support or resources to the designated organisation as well as asset freezes.
It is a crime for a person in the United States or subject to the jurisdiction of the United States to knowingly provide “material support or resources” to or receive military-type training from or on behalf of a designated FTO.
Representatives and members of a designated FTO, if they are aliens, are inadmissible to and, in certain circumstances removable from, the United States.
