ABU DHABI // Children’s clothing and toys will be collected on Al Maryah Island in Abu Dhabi during Ramadan, in support of the UAE Year of Giving.

New toys and clothes for children under age 12 can be donated at the Ramadan lantern gifting station in The Galleria mall.

The drive will take place throughout the holy month. The gifts collected will be wrapped and distributed by volunteers to organisations in the UAE.

The initiative is part of Al Maryah Island’s Give Back campaign, said Ali Al Muhairi, executive director of Mubadala Real Estate and Infrastructure.

“The UAE has a proud history of philanthropy and it is our honour to launch our first initiative during the month of Ramadan to encourage and celebrate the country’s virtues of giving,” he said.

Gulf Related, a real estate development company, Dolphin Energy and Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (Taqa) are supporting the campaign, reported Wam, the state news agency.

Who was Alfred Nobel?

The Nobel Prize was created by wealthy Swedish chemist and entrepreneur Alfred Nobel.

  • In his will he dictated that the bulk of his estate should be used to fund "prizes to those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind".
  • Nobel is best known as the inventor of dynamite, but also wrote poetry and drama and could speak Russian, French, English and German by the age of 17. The five original prize categories reflect the interests closest to his heart.
  • Nobel died in 1896 but it took until 1901, following a legal battle over his will, before the first prizes were awarded.
