Ramadan release for 100s of prisoners in Dubai

DUBAI // Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and the Ruler of Dubai, today ordered the release of 554 prisoners, including 93 Emiratis, from Dubai prisons.

The move comes ahead of the Holy Month of Ramadan and reflects the ruler's desire "to allow the released prisoners an opportunity to engage in social life, to correct their path and start a new page in life as righteous members of the society, doing good to their families and the community at large," Dubai's Attorney General Essam Al Humaidan told the state news agency Wam.

"This generous gesture of clemency will give them a golden opportunity to start a decent life and will bring happiness to their families as we stand on the threshold of the holy month of Ramadan," Mr Al Humaidan said.

The Public Prosecution Department has begun making preparations for the implementation of the decree.
