DUBAI // A police officer was assaulted by two brothers after he tried to stop them beating their sister, Dubai Criminal Court heard.

In June last year at Al Barsha police station, the two Emiratis attacked the officer while they were assaulting their sister, 20, who was giving a statement about a case involving consensual sex outside of wedlock.

The brothers, aged 29 and 39, resisted the Emirati officer and assaulted him.

“My 39-year-old brother started slapping me and hitting me on my face, and my other brother joined in and assaulted me as well before a police officer tried to stop them,” the sister said.

“I saw blood on the officer’s uniform before they took my brothers to another room.”

The officer, 27, said: “They pushed me against the door when I intervened. While I was trying to restrain the younger brother, he pulled out a blade from his mouth. He cut himself in the process and covered my uniform with his blood.

“He threatened to swallow the blade if we didn’t allow them to see their sister.”

The older brother did not appear in court to enter a plea on the charge of assaulting a public servant. The younger man was not asked to enter a plea.

The next hearing is set for May 30.
